“When You Make Statements You’re Weak, When You Ask Questions You’re Strong” – Federico Gatarini Reveals the Secret Behind Great Leadership

In the latest episode of the success podcast, leadership coach Federico Gatarini opened up about how communication can completely transform not only a company, but also a leader’s personal life.
According to him, the biggest problem most business leaders face today is surprisingly simple: they don’t know how to ask the right questions.
“Leaders don’t know how to ask questions. That’s why they come to me,” he said during the interview, explaining that leadership is not talent, but training.
Federico explained that a real leader is not someone who constantly gives orders, but someone who knows how to involve people in the process, making them feel important, understood, and part of something bigger than just a company.
“When you make statements you’re weak. When you ask questions you’re strong,” he said.
The Italian coach believes that most conflicts inside companies are created by misunderstandings and poor communication. Instead of reacting with authority or ego, leaders should stop and ask questions like: “What do you mean by that?” or “How did you come to that conclusion?”
According to Federico, modern leaders must find a balance between tolerance and authority. Being too soft creates a lack of boundaries, while being overly authoritarian creates fear and tension inside the team.
During the conversation, he also shared his personal story, revealing that years ago he struggled with low self-esteem, anger management, and poor communication skills, which caused him to lose friendships, relationships, and even work opportunities.
“I was tired of not being seen. I was tired of having to scream to make a point,” he admitted.
That personal transformation pushed him to study communication, conflict management, and leadership deeply. Today, he helps entrepreneurs and business owners build stronger teams, improve workplace dynamics, and become better communicators.
One of the strongest messages from the podcast was the importance of internal dialogue. Federico explained that before changing the way we speak to others, we first need to change the way we speak to ourselves.
“Communication comes from the inside first. If your inner voice constantly criticizes you, you will criticize others too,” he explained.
The leadership coach also spoke about the importance of isolation and self-reflection for personal growth. He believes that sometimes people need a period away from negative influences in order to rebuild confidence and create a stronger mindset.
Another key point of the discussion was feedback inside companies. Federico advised leaders to criticize employees privately, but praise them publicly in front of the team.
“When feedback is positive, do it publicly. People want to feel recognized and appreciated,” he said.
Beyond business, Federico explained that leadership and communication skills improve every area of life, including relationships, parenting, and friendships. According to him, people today suffer from a deep sense of loneliness because they don’t feel understood or truly seen by others.
Toward the end of the podcast, he shared the advice he would want people to remember forever:
“Don’t focus only on what you say or even how you say it. Focus on how you make people feel when you speak to them.”
He ended with one final reminder for young entrepreneurs and future leaders:
“It’s not talent. It’s training.”
